Following the death of the first patient with the symptoms of Ebola in the United States, there has now been a newly diagnosed case of the Ebola Disease Virus in the United States. An unidentified 26-year-old nurse who cared for Mr. Duncan has now been diagnosed with the Ebola Virus Disease, making this the first transmission case outside of Africa. Previous cases of Ebola outside of Africa have been health care workers evacuated from Africa, for treatment in other countries. Since the outbreak of the Ebola Disease Virus, health care workers have been a high risk group when it comes to contracting the virus, even when they are fully protected by wearing a Hazmat suit. This further buttresses the importance of hygiene in the containment of Ebola. Even when you are wearing a protective outfit, a simple breach in hygiene can cause one to become infected. If you find yourself taking care of an Ebola patient, take all necessary precautions and ensure that all protective outfits are removed and disposed off according to manufacturer’s instructions. While the Nigerian government continues efforts to prevent a reoccurrence of the Ebola Disease Virus in Nigeria, we should keep washing our hands and sanitising our environment.
