The importance of promoting breast cancer awareness can not be overstated – with this awareness boost there is more of a possibility to combat the illness as early detection is the most effective protection against breast cancer. In support of the Breast Cancer Awareness month, Jovago further underlines the need to disseminate information about the nature of breast cancer and how to stay updated with one’s health. Several breast cancer awareness organizations exist across the African continent for the cause of reducing the death toll caused by the ailment. In South Africa, breast cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers and a leading cause of death for women – this is the case for many African countries as well.

Breast cancer survivors also champion the cause for awareness – the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria for example, was created by Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, a survivor who felt the need to enlighten Nigerian women on the dangers of breast cancer. Continuous examination is important for the prevention of breast cancer as this increases the chances of early detection which could be the deciding factor for survival. Women as a key part of families and the society need to stay literally abreast of all matters concerning their health.

Mammograms are crucial to the early detection of breast cancer and subsequently the reduction of the risk of death. However regular breast self-exams are a good substitute as they can also help with early detection of any abnormal lumps in the breasts.

Women ought to be constantly reminded to carry out these breast self-exams as often as possible. Monthly self-exams are prescribed to get women familiar with their breasts so as to enable them promptly detect abnormal lumps.

Alongside spa treatments, facial and the likes, breast self exams should be incorporated into the beauty routines and regimens of women of all ages. Self-enlightenment about the breast examinations would also come in handy in this war against ignorance regarding breast cancer. Although not all cancers can be detected in this manner, this is quite the easy way to minimize health risks. Breast self exams may be a tedious task for many but getting familiar with the breasts increases the chances of noticing any changes.
