Former Super Eagles of Nigeria captain, Joseph Yobo, has been appointed the new assistant coach of the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). An official statement from the NFF on Wednesday confirmed Yobo’s appointment as he replaces Imama Amapakabo who has been relieved of his duties with the national team.

The 2013 AFCON winning captain is now set to assist German tactician, Gernot Rohr, in seeing to the success of the Super Eagles especially as regards the 2021 AFCON qualification and 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

It will be recalled that Yobo graduated to the senior national team after representing the country’s national U20 side at the 1999 FIFA U20 World Cup. He will go on to form part of the Super Eagles squad at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and also participated in the 2010 and 2014 editions of the tournament. He equally featured in six AFCON finals for Nigeria (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, and captained Nigeria to victory in the 2013 edition in South Africa).

Considered an Everton FC of England legend, Yobo during his playing days, became only the second footballer in Everton’s history to feature in all 38 league matches, during the 2006/2007 season under David Moyes, and would go on to captain the Toffees later in his career. Yobo retired from national duties after the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The new Super Eagles assistant coach will make his first appearance on the national team touchlines when Nigeria confronts Sierra Leone on March 23, in an AFCON 2021 qualifier.
