The 2015 Scrabble World Champion, Wellington Jighere, has unveiled a new line of affordable high quality scrabble boards at the Abuja National Stadium.

The board, named ‘Welly Board’, is made from durable materials that are aesthetically pleasing and its considerable finish makes it a great board for both beginners and professionals in the game.

Jighere told newsmen in Abuja, that the board is a part of his commitment to giving back to the country by making quality scrabble boards available to all.

Today’s event is the unveiling of the welly board; you see, one of the major things that has militated against the development of Scrabble in Nigeria is access to affordable and good quality Scrabble playing materials. We have a situation whereby most of the Scrabble playing materials that are good enough for use by professionals are actually costly, while the other class of materials are very low quality in our supermarkets.

So this initiative was to find a bridge between this high ended boards and this other one, something that is of high quality and at an affordable price.

Wellington Jighere

Hon. Abdullahi Umar Faruk, a member of House of Representatives, representing Birnin Kebbi/Kalgo/Bunza of Kebbi State, commended Jighere for the initiative, which will see more Nigerians indulge in the game of scrabble.

“This young man conceived it in his heart that he should add value to his society and that was what he did. One way we can promote this sport in our country is if the kits like racks, tiles, boards and bags are available and affordable, the sport will grow in the country.”

Hon. Abdullahi Umar Faruk

Hon. Faruk urged the government at all levels – clubs, schools and the general public – to support the former champion’s initiative to grow the sport in the country.
