The National Museum of Unity, Ibadan, will hold a Monument Day this month to draw attention to the condition of monuments in the country.
The museum’s Curator, Bode Adesina, told News Agency Nigeria, NAN,that the date would be fixed by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, and the event was to rally support for serious conservation efforts.
“We want to draw the attention of the public to the condition of those relics which are located in various parts of the country,” he told NAN.
Mr. Adesina said the programme was being organized by the museum in collaboration with its society and the Oyo State Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
“This year’s edition will feature a tour by the organizers. The organizers, in company with journalists, will visit some monuments in the state, especially Bishop Ajayi Crowther’s ancestral home.
“We want to showcase it so that it will be declared a national monument.
“We really want to work out a dossier on how it could be enlisted as a World Heritage site like Sukur in Adamawa and Osun-Osogbo groove,” Mr. Adesina said.
The event is also to sensitize the public about the importance of monuments and the need to conserve them for future generations.
“In addition, we also want to promote tourism so that people can visit such sites,” Mr. Adesina concluded.
