Handbags are one of the most useful fashionable items ladies have in their wardrobe. They’re not just a great accessory that adds charm and completes our ensemble, they also help keep essential valuables like our go-to-makeup, sunglasses, phones, wallet, miscellaneous papers organized and handy, and in most cases safeguards them from theft and damage. It can be quite heartbreaking getting a handbag with the intention of showing it off, instead, it ends up not truly lasting. It doesn’t really matter how much it costs, the quality or design, if you don’t pay attention and provide the necessary care for these babies then it’s only a matter of time before they wear out. So, at the end of the day, the goal is to extend your handbag’s life to still be in a great condition for years to come.  Below are a few tips on how to care for handbags, making them look good inside and out:
  • Firstly do not put handbags on the floor, there are germs and other dirty things on the floor which could ruin your bag. Place the bag on a table, on a chair or preferably on your lap. If your handbag is like the cross-body, you could hang it on the back of a chair.
  • Swap your bags from time to time; it’s the best way to keep bags looking brand new. The more you continually use one bag, the more it gets worn, so it’s best to change it from time to time to prevent early damage.
  • Once you notice a wreck on your bag, no matter how small, don’t delay on taking it to a repair shop, because if you leave it, the damage might get worse.
  • It’s also important to give your bag enough room to breathe. Make sure not to pile or stack it up with too much to help retain its shape because overstuffing the bag can make it lose the original shape.
  • To avoid scratches and maybe creases, items such as go-to makeup lipsticks/eyeliners should be kept in a smaller cosmetic purse before putting in the bag.
  • Constantly zip up your bag and fasten the overlap handles. Leaving handles with heavy hardware to hang on the bag when not in use will add unnecessary stress to it, which may lead to cuts or tear.
  • All handbags are not the same. It’s necessary to find out what type of material your handbag is made of because they require different instructions to clean and preserve it.
  • Additionally, avoid washing/brushing/cleaning it too much. A build-up of chemical products will also contribute to the destruction of your bag. Spot dirt in necessary places, take care not wipe on any areas other than the affected one, otherwise, you could spread the discoloration elsewhere. Brush gently to get stains out and avoid applying too much pressure.
  • Storage is another vital key to preserving your bag. Most handbags come with their own dust bag to cover the handbag and prevent dust from getting to it. But if you don’t happen to have a dust bag, a pillowcase that is big enough for the bag will work just as well. After each use properly store the handbag in your closet – (if you’re swapping bags often), wipe inside and outside clean and keep your handbags stuffed, so it maintains its shape.
