Have you heard of the BlackBerry phone life span myth? It’s a running gag shared by most people; one which states that BlackBerry phones don’t last longer than a year. Looking back, all the BlackBerry phones I’ve had started malfunctioning after a year or so of being purchased. Have you experienced this? It’s almost as if the phone gets a memo from its manufacturers that it’s due for a breakdown.

Jokes apart, there are certain measures that we probably could have taken to care for our BlackBerry phones, extending their life span. Segun Bisriyu of SLOT Phones had these to say in a recent publication:

1. STAY AWAY FROM MOISTURE

Not dunking your phone in a bucket of water is an obvious rule, but here’s one you might not have heard of – don’t use your BlackBerry phone in hot, steamy rooms like the kitchen when you’re cooking, or heated sauna rooms.  Also care for your BlackBerry by refraining from touching its trackpad or screen with sweaty palms. According to Segun, moisture can cause the phone to malfunction once it gets into the handset. This apparently applies to droplets or water in its gaseous state.

2. DON’T CHARGE YOUR BLACKBERRY PHONE OVERNIGHT

A lot of us in Nigeria are guilty of this crime. This is no surprise considering the country’s unfortunate electricity supply situation, which has improved inarguably in the last few months. The problem with overnight charging is voltage fluctuations that could take place unknown to you. They are certain to damage your phone’s battery panel in the short or long term.

3. TURN OFF YOUR 3G WHEN NOT IN USE

It’s easy to leave your 3G internet connection turned on even when it’s not in use. It’s one of these things we do automatically without giving too much thought to it. However,  Segun recommends turning it off at intervals to prevent the BlackBerry handset and battery from heating up for long durations, again unknown to us.
