When I think of a ‘compass’, I see ‘Jack Sparrow’ from the movie ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. Since I saw that movie, I have been a huge fan of Johnny Depp’s movies. Did anyone notice how his compass never works? He had that compass from the first movie until the last one and he very well knows that the compass doesn’t work. Now here is something – a broken compass still has a direction. It might not point you in the right direction, but it is pointing towards someone else’s destination. Make sense? Hold that thought.
A stopped clock tells the right time two times in a day. A damaged clock on the other hand, shouldn’t be trusted because it has a high possibility of telling the wrong time but you see, a clock which has stopped at let’s say 11:32, is right at 11:32 am and 11:32 pm. It is a stopped clock but still tells the right time at those particular times of the day.
In life, the people who are referred to as ‘rejects’ are written off by people who think/know/feel they have nothing to offer this world. Some even believe ‘rejects’ are toxic when in fact, nothing in life is worthless. Every human being has something to offer someone out there. Just because what you have offered Mr. A is meaningless to him doesn’t make it meaningless to Mrs B. If you throw out empty cans of drinks or food, the recyclers pick them up and it is useful to them.
Remember the first paragraph about a compass? It is true that with a broken compass, you could lose your bearings but remember no bearing is wrong. If you are going to Point B and your compass is pointing to Point A, remember that even though it is not your destination, it is a destination for someone somewhere. As humans, at some point, everything comes crashing down on you. Sometimes it becomes too much or even too little. Sometimes it seems easier to end it all than hope for things to get better with no time frame attached to it. Did you miss your way? Are you wondering where you went wrong? Oh well, that’s life … but really, in every bad situation there is always something to salvage. The broken compass and the stopped clock may seem like a hopeless situation but look deeper – there is some ‘right’ in them.
Once upon a time, I lost my way. I couldn’t think of any good left in me or this world. I felt bad for newborn babies because I felt like they were clueless about how cruel the world can be. I felt happy for people who had just died because I felt they were free at last. In reality, those feelings are right. Newborn babies have to depend on their parents to protect them from the cruelty of the world and there is freedom in death. I wasn’t a pessimist. I was damaged. The glass wasn’t half full or half empty in my eyes, the water was little and the glass was too big. I saw things from a perspective that could only prevent one from growing and rising above it all. I had to change my mindset to grow. I had to take out the best of every awful situation I ever found myself in. I told myself the worst could not happen and the best could happen at any time. Yes! It is difficult to switch from a pessimistic person to an optimistic person in a nanosecond but guess what? It is possible.
I would tell anyone reading this to take it more than one little step at a time because one step is not enough! You should run and find that one good thing to take out of that bad situation. Remember that even a stopped clock still tells the time right twice in a day.
