I woke up that Monday morning with pains in my legs. I ached badly and I was wondering what I did to cause such indescribable pain when it hit me…I went mountain climbing on Valentine’s Day! Yes, my 12-trip challenge for February fell on Valentine’s day – way to keep a single lady busy, yes? But hold on; before we get started on that, I saw two places in the month of February. Everyone in Ekiti State keeps talking about Fajuyi Memorial Park – It always shows up in Google searches too. So when my boss traveled on the day before Valentine’s Day, I decided to use my free time for something worthwhile. I picked up my camera, called up a fellow corper friend and set out for the much talked about Fajuyi Park. So, was it all it was made out to be? Maybe… Maybe not… But I did have a nice time. We paid a token of 100 naira for entrance fee (information for future visitors) and when the man we paid our money to wanted to leave us to our own antics, I told him that our 100 naira must be put to good use and he should show us around. LOL. He took us to the museum where Fajuyi’s uniform was hung- his uniform from 1966. We also saw his sword and cap. We were then taken to the place where he was buried and where a statue had been erected in his name. Story goes that he was a great military Governor and when he died, his friend brought his body back to Ekiti State and buried him. He died during the coup in 1966. There is also a very high building at the park from where one can see Ado-Ekiti from above. The view is just priceless. My friend and I also sat on the grass and just enjoyed the quiet away from everyday hustle and bustle. We filmed a video and I sang and danced to “Lara George’s-Dansaki” And yes, I danced in public 🙂 It was fun all the way but my last bit of fun for the day was on the swings. The park has this section of swings and all the stuff little kids use for their play time. It took me back to the days when I was a brownie in Girl Scouts. The days of having nothing to worry about but get my brother to push my swing. I sang “twinkle-twinkle little star” and just basked in the happiness and joy in my heart. Free from troubles and issues… just pure bliss. I made a video of me – the grown girl in her 20s swinging and just smiling/laughing. I pray that this joy never ceases from my heart, that even when I am married with the kids, I will still have this little girl in me; the little girl who lights up in laughs and smiles without troubles weighing her down. The next day, which was Valentine’s Day, was the day I and fellow Christian Corpers (NCCF) set out for mountain climbing. The mountain was at the outskirts of town and it was a challenge to even get there – the road walk on the way there was long! I was so scared at some points, but thank God for ajuwaya boots. Those things have some solid heels. The mountain is actually higher than Olumo Rock which I climbed last year and some parts of it had me asking myself “how na?” but I finally got to the top of the mountain. Of course my favourite thing to do when I get to the apex of hills/mountains/rocks is to sit, place my legs over the edge and just stare at the earth below. There’s something about sitting high up above the ground… it makes you see things clearly and appreciate God for the works of His Hands. Of course there will be no mountain climbing without a jump at the top of it all so that is exactly what I did with friends. There’s no fear in this game. That’s what the 12-trip challenge for all single women is all about isn’t it? Damning fears and excuses and just going all out. Picking up the camera and bags and setting out on new adventures. I’ve been loving it so far. Let’s see what my travel memoirs for the month of March will bring. Till next month’s 12-trip challenge, With love, hugs and fearless bravery, Frances.   About the Writer: Frances Okoro is a Lawyer, writer and blogger.
