  The Nigerian government in a bid to effectively handle the security challenges confronting the country,  has approved the sum of N13.3 billion for the commencement of the community policing initiative. This information was revealed in a report submitted to the National Economic Council (NEC) which is led by Vice President, Yemi Osibanjo, SAN. Submitted by the National Economic Council’s ad-hoc committee on Security and Policing, headed by the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, the report according to Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nassarawa was the result of a meeting by the ad-hoc committee to review the security challenges confronting Nigeria.

Governor Abdullahi went further to state that there had been briefings and presentations from relevant stakeholders such as the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nigeria’s Inspector General Police (IGP), the country’s Chief of Defense Staff, and the Department of State Services.
“Council resolved that the Chair of the NGF (Nigeria Governors’ Forum) with two other governors would be meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Finance Minister and the Inspector-General of Police to coordinate the proper utilization of the funding of community policing in the states. The federal government has already approved N13billion for this same purpose.” Abdullahi Sule

Further, Governor Sule noted that it has been observed that the office of the NSA needed adequate funding to carry out its functions effectively as it has been underfunded in the last five years.
“State governments have been overwhelmed by insecurity expenditures and there is, therefore, the need by the Federal Government to inject more funds to augment expenses by the states, amongst others.” Sule
