Do You Know: Board Games That Made Our Childhood

Amid the glamour of amazing childhood moments and folktales, are engaging games that made growing up more enjoyable for the average Nigerian.

Even now, despite our regular tedious days and short nights, Nigerians have a way of de-stressing via several activities that usually start up with a hangout with friends, which ultimately would turn into a sports affair where board games are usually the order of the day, even before the advent of modern video games and technology.

These board games have have stood the test of the ages and still remain a favorite for many Nigerians today.

Let us take a look at a number of these board games.

Ayo

The Ayo game is arguably the most popular traditional game in Africa.

The game is made up of a round-like board containing 12 holes, six on each side of the board. Each hole contains four seeds.

It is conventionally played by two players sitting across from each other.

Each player must gather more seeds and emerge the winner.

Checkers or Draughts

Draughts is played on a 10×20 board with two color coded sets of pieces. Each player must try to capture his/her opponent’s pieces as the game progresses.

The player without pieces remaining or the player who cannot move their piece on the board due to a block move by the other player loses the game.

Ludo

The Ludo board is divided in four houses, yellow, green, blue and red. It is conventionally played between two to four players.

Each player must attempt to reach the finish line first by rolling the dice and moving their piece according to the cumulative number on the dices.

Snakes and Ladders

This tricky game found on the back of Oxford Cabin and Yale biscuit packs is arguably the most fun of the board games.

You roll the dice and the ladders will lead you up, or the slippery snakes will drag you back down.

The aim of the game is to get to the top square first.

These are just a few of the many board games that helped make my childhood very fun.
