2018 is the year the long-standing issue of digital well-being for mobile phone users gets addressed. It’s quite commendable the actions these mobile device giants (Apple and Google) have taken to ensure that people can use their mobile phones a little less than usual, especially calling to mind that they make more money when you use your device more.

Social media giant, Facebook, has also taken definitive steps to ensure healthy use of its online social networking platforms. Hence, the company recently launched a new Activity Dashboard that will help users manage their screen time on Facebook and Instagram. The new set of tools include the activity dashboard, a daily reminder and quick options for muting notifications.

“We want the time people spend on Facebook and Instagram to be intentional, positive and inspiring. Our hope is that these tools give people more control over the time they spend on our platforms and also foster conversations between parents and teens about the online habits that are right for them,” said the tech giant in their press release.

The activity dashboard is available on the settings page of both the Facebook and Instagram app. On Instagram, tap “Your Activity,” and on Facebook, tap “Your Time on Facebook.” The resulting screens will reveal the new dashboard that contains information on your online activity per device. If you use multiple devices to access these platforms, you’ll have to do a quick sum to get your total screen time.

You can set reminders and time limits on how long you want to use any of the social media apps for each day, and you will receive a push notification once you’ve reached your daily limit.  You can also mute Push Notifications for a period of time.

Currently, these features are available only on mobile. Plus, other proprietary apps like Facebook Messenger and IGTV don’t have it yet either. So, if you are using a desktop to access social media, or the other apps mentioned above, you’d have to exercise some self-control.
