The market for Nigerian-made fashion had until recently been between the path of nonexistent and unknown in comparison to the fashion invasion from America, Asia and Europe. Fashion is taking a large segment of the made in Nigeria pie, in light of the Buy Naija to Grow the Naira movement which started in 2016. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has joined the front with her ‘Wear Nigerian’ project.
‘Wear Nigerian’ was created on Instagram on the 6th of April with the aim of promoting Nigerian fashion brands. The handle is managed by her nieces Chisom and Amaka, and the pictures are tagged to the designers who are all Nigerian. The styles and fabric combinations are expressive. Even though, before now, Adichie’s style has always been Nigerian-inspired.
We should all be inspired. Talk about a woman being able to wear many hats, here is praise for her as a writer, a speaker, an activist and now, a public fashion icon.
Adichie bears testimony to the truth that every woman is powerful enough to champion a cause, any cause, with passion, without fear.
