Losing weight is a constant struggle for a lot of people, either for health or cosmetic reasons. It also doesn’t help that diet regimes can be tough and hard to stick with. If you have been trying to lose weight with no success, the following points can help you identify what you may be doing wrong.   Discipline One of the major problems people have with dieting is discipline. If you’re dieting because it is a fad, your chances of sticking with it long enough to see positive results is slim. Even when you diet for serious weight loss, going on and off will significantly reduce your chances of losing weight. You have to be consistent in a diet regime to see results. You can’t have a healthy breakfast then decide to cheat on your diet just because you’re offered a delicious plate of food loaded with carbs. Solution: Try picking long term diets that you can stick with, without feeling pressured or overwhelmed. Instead of going on a fruits-only diet for a week only to stuff yourself with unhealthy carbs the following week, try making fruits a part of your meal daily. If you decide to go on strict diets with time limits, always remind yourself that the only way you can lose weight is by being disciplined.   Commitment Seeing something through is rarely a trait of weight loss addicts. You are probably not seeing results because you jump ship too early and abandon your diet. Solution: Even if another diet regime appears to be more effective than the one you’re currently on, endeavour to finish the current one before starting another. That way, you will be committed to a diet and can fully monitor if it works for your weight loss goal or not.   Hunger Sounds obvious, but hunger is one of the reasons diets fail. If a diet is too strict, tells you to consume fewer calories than you need, or eat a specific meal for a number of days, the result will be a hungry, tired and unhappy you. The body needs food, and starving yourself won’t do any good. Solution: Rather than starve yourself, eat healthy meals that are filling. Form a habit of eating proteins like egg, fish, and beans. Consume a lot of fibre and healthy fat, including veggies, fruits, quinoa, oats, and wheat bread. They will fill you up and won’t harm your weight loss goals. If you have not been having any success losing weight, go through this checklist to see if there is anything you can incorporate into your diet.   About the author: Amina Salau is a writer and editor running The Illuminated Pen.
