His Excellency turns 73 today, a milestone being celebrated by fellow Nigerian citizens across the world. Born on December 17, 1942, President Buhari has lived quite an interesting life with several significant accomplishments under his belt. Here are a few interesting facts about him that you may not know already. 1. Did you know that Buhari is the twenty-third child of his father, Adamu Buhari? Adamu unfortunately passed away when he was very young, four years old to be exact. 2.. The retired Army General had a highly successful military career, rising through the ranks in a short span of time. A major highlight was his education at the prestigious US Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in the United States from 1979 to 1980 where he gained a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies. 3. The self-described “converted democrat” was Head of State of Nigeria from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985 as a result of a military coup d’etat. 4. He is the personal epitome of the saying “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”. Mr. President unsuccessfully ran for the Nigerian Presidency three times in a row- in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections – before finally defeating former president, Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. He was sworn into office on 29 May, 2015. 5. Buhari is a father to ten children – one of whom unfortunately passed away in 2012 – from his past and present marriages.   A very happy birthday to our dear President once again!
