A large amount of generated waste across various Nigerian towns and cities is left unattended because of the country’s lack of an organized waste collection system. Sadly, this waste could end up in the streets and can cause gross pollution. To solve this problem, WasteBazaar was introduced as a way of converting waste into valuable resources and mitigating pollution.

WasteBazaar is a mobile app that caters to adequate urban waste management, providing waste collection and recycling services to urban residents. The app concerns itself majorly with managing the waste crisis prevalent in most Nigerian cities. Users are often given incentives for recycling their waste and this encourages and supports extensive participation. In essence, the app actively reduces the level of indiscriminate waste disposal and digitizes a city’s waste collection and recycling systems.

The app was launched in November 2019 in Nigeria as a digital waste-to-value platform. It served as a medium to connect urban residents to neighbourhood recycling stations through the use of Geo-location. These residents are able to earn GreenCREDITS in exchange for every waste disposal effort made, and the GreenCREDITS can be used to settle bills, make payment for groceries, and at point-of-sale terminals. Waste in the form of plastic, metal, carton boxes, and even Electronic waste can all be recycled.
