Animal are multi-cellular organism that obtains energy by eating food. With over 2 million known species, and many more awaiting identification, animals are the most diverse forms of life on earth. They range in size from 30-m (100-ft) long to microscopic organisms only 0.05 mm (0.002 in) long. They live in a vast range of habitats, from deserts and Arctic tundra to the deep-sea floor. Animals are the only living things that have evolved nervous systems and sense organs that monitor their surroundings. The study of animals is known as zoology. (Microsoft Encarta) Here are some animal facts, I guess if you get to the last fact all you will say is wow!
  • Roosters can’t crow if they can’t fully extend their necks.
  • Camels have three eyelids to protect themselves from blowing sand.
  • Butterflies taste with their feet.
  • Only female mosquitoes bite and drink blood.
  • An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.
  • A cat’s jaws cannot move sideways.
  • Honeybees never sleep.
  • Cockroaches can live for 9 days after their head has been cut off.
  • If you keep a goldfish in the dark, it will eventually turn white
  • A hummingbird weighs less than a penny.
  • The ant, when intoxicated, will always fall over to its right side.
  • A lion’s roar can be heard from more than five miles away.
  • The abdomen of the ant contains two stomachs. One stomach holds the food for itself and second stomach is for food to be shared with other ants.
  • A shrimp’s heart is in its head.
  • A duck’s quack doesn’t echo, and no one knows why.
  • The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the males head off.
  • The heart of a mouse beats 650 times per minute.
  • The female pigeon cannot lay eggs if she is alone. In order for her ovaries to function, she must be able to see another pigeon.
  • A giraffe can clean its ears with its 21-inch tongue.
  • The average housefly lives only two weeks.
  • Spiders have transparent blood.
  • Snails breathe through their feet.
  • Owls are one of the only birds who can see the color blue!
  • Male monkeys lose the hair on their heads in the same way men do.
  • Despite the hump, a camel’s spine is straight.
  • Crocodiles swallow stones to help them dive deeper.
  • Crocodile babies don’t have sex chromosomes; the temperature at which the egg develops determines gender.
  • A completely blind chameleon will still take on the colors of its environment.
