There is no hard and fast rule to managing your employees, but the success or failure of managing them can either build or destroy your organization. Unhappy and lazy employees generally harm organizational success, and the reverse becomes the case when your employees are happy and productive. No matter your goals and visions as an entrepreneur or manager, you need your employees to achieve them, and employee management goes beyond pushing your staff to be more productive. Employee management, also known as Human Resource Management (HRM), is a holistic process that helps to bring out employees’ best performances, so they can achieve organizational goals. It encompasses staff recruitment, performance measurement, monitoring, interaction, reward, and employee discipline, as the case may be. All these can be extremely challenging, especially when you have a large number of employees in your organization. This article provides golden rules that’ll help you manage your staff effectively and subsequently achieve your business goals. Rule 1: Hire the Right People: Getting this wrong would invariably ruin whatever efforts you put to manage your employees. Be careful of the type of person you hire in your organization. Inasmuch as you have to look out for people who fit the job and have the required qualifications, you also have to look out for qualities like honesty, integrity, reliability, team player, enthusiasm, emotional intelligence, determination, etc. This is why the recruitment process should be thorough to avoid hiring people who would destroy your business. Rule 2: Set clear Goals and Expectations: Now that you have the right staff, let them know what you want and expect from them. Don’t leave them hanging. Set realistic targets and goals for them and motivate them by praising them, encouraging them, and acknowledging their loyalty, dedication, and hard work. This helps you track the individual performance of employees and general organization progress. Always remember that your employees are not mind-readers, therefore, if you don’t tell them what you want, they won’t be able to meet your expectations.

Rule 3: Employee Evaluation: Although, most employees do not like their employers hovering over their workspace, there are still subtle ways to achieve this without micromanaging, breaching employee privacy, and giving constant negative feedback. Instead, set goals, communicate these goals to your employees, set a deadline for them to report back, and schedule at least a monthly meeting for reviews. Rule 4: Encourage Effective Communication: Playing hard to get or being overly strict is a stumbling block to employee management. To gain trust and respect from your employees, you have to be approachable, create an avenue where employees can air their opinions, ideas, or complaints, get to know them on a personal level, check in with them when everything is alright, respect their privacy, avoid bad-mouthing them in front of others, and above all, learn to listen. Rule 5: Balance Praise and Criticism Wisely: Your employees will not be wrong all the time nor will they be right all the time. Finding a balance between praising and criticizing them is key. When your staff performs well, praise and reward them as this will encourage them to work harder. On the other hand, when they act wrongly or perform poorly, constructively criticize them by pointing out their errors and suggesting a better way to handle the situation. If you only give praise, employees won’t grow and if you only criticize, they become demoralized. Rule 6: Be an Example: Be the employee you want your employees to be. If you want them punctual, be punctual. If you want them to be emotionally intelligent, then be emotionally intelligent. If you want them to be kind, then be kind. Everything begins with you. Finally, customize your management approach to fit each employee’s distinct personality and strengths. Featured Image Source: Myhertoolkit
