ConnectNigeria   When it comes to success, expanding your horizon is a principle you can’t afford to ignore. Of all the ways to do this, travel is one that comes with great opportunities to relax and have fun while learning new things. If you would like to travel but can’t afford the more mainstream destinations, don’t despair. Check out these amazing places that will give you a chance to broaden your horizon and enjoy a unique vacation on a budget. Rwanda When you hear “Rwanda”, “genocide” may be what comes to mind, but many have been surprised to find that this gorgeous tourist destination, often referred to as the land of a thousand hills, is a great place for an unforgettable vacation. One visitor recently described Rwanda as “the Switzerland of Africa.” Mariemu visited Rwanda from Nigeria on an official trip, and even though she was hesitant at first, she says now that she didn’t regret it one bit. “It is SO neat and clean, they have mountains everywhere. There’s free wifi everywhere. Even the okada riders have insurance,” she gushed. Coffee and tea are Rwanda’s biggest exports so be sure to enjoy some. Ask to see the Traditional Rwandan Dance Troupe based near Huye. In Kigali, be sure to visit Shake and Sip to see the city in action as you enjoy tasty snacks and drinks, and also stop over at the nearby Juicilicious, a juice bar which specialises in creative mixes and cocktails from a great selection of fresh fruit juice.  If you love animals, you will also enjoy Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest Safari Park and Akagera National Park. Gambia Believe it or not, this little country has become a popular beach destination for European tourists, and it would be a shame if we missed out. Holidaymakers have many popular vacation spots to enjoy and interesting sights to see, including the Kunta Kinte Island, the Senegambia Craft Market and the Bijilo Forest Park where Green Vervet Monkeys can be seen. There’s no shortage of delicious food and drink as there are up to 21 beach bars and clubs in the Tourism Development Area alone, and over 100 restaurants in the Senegambia area. Bird watching, fishing, boat rides and many other activities will spice up your vacation. Enjoy the sun, sand, and cultural experience this country has in abundance and come back home renewed and refreshed! Seychelles Seychelles is an exquisite little country with a population of about 90,024- the smallest population of any African nation. Being an island country (and thus also referred to as The Seychelles Islands), visitors enjoy a vacation with an abundance of coconut water and fresh juices, fruit curries, and seafood accompanying rice dishes. The Seychelles Golf Club is a must for golfers. Swimming and snorkeling are also popular activities for vacationers here. You can visit the Mission Lodge and the Seychelles Botanical Garden in the capital city of Victoria, or just relax and enjoy nature’s beauty on any of the gorgeous beaches on the various islands. Say hello to turtles and corals, and don’t be shocked to see a dark-skinned woman with honey-blonde hair and blue eyes; the islanders are a mixture of black freed slaves, Indian merchants, French imperialists and British settlers. Ghana You don’t have to travel too far to enjoy a wonderful vacation. Our dear neighbours are friendly and ever ready to play host, as many visitors to Ghana have found. There are beautiful beaches to enjoy and lovely handicrafts to buy, as well as mountains and beautiful waterfalls. And in Cape Coast you’ll find a crocodile pond at Hans Cottage Botel (a botel is a boat that serves as a hotel) where you can pet and sit on crocodiles, if you are daring. You can also explore the shore of the Atlantic Ocean in the western region of Ghana, where the Busua Beach Resort is located. Whether you’re lying on the beach, sailing in a catamaran or horseback riding on the seashore, you’ll feel welcome in Ghana. Akwaaba!  Nigeria- Obudu Some say that if you haven’t explored the beauty of your home country, travelling to a different country is not expedient. Obudu in Cross River State is one place that proves them absolutely right. Obudu Mountain Resort has 159 rooms in different accommodation categories, a state-of-the-art cable car with 34 cars, a water park, the Becheve Nature Reserve where 250 different species of migratory birds have been observed at the ranch at different times throughout the year, waterfalls and lots more! Obudu welcomes visitors all year round, but to get the best out of it- clear sky, cool air and blooming flowers- you want to visit between October and February. Obudu promises you a wonderful vacation; right here in Nigeria. There you have it: being on a budget doesn’t have to mean “no vacation.” Here’s a bonus: If you really, really want to leave the shores of Africa, and you’re willing to stretch a little more financially, you absolutely must go to Greece. Greece is a popular holiday destination, and as such is a little bit expensive in the summer, but it is worth every kobo, visitors guarantee. “Everyone should have Greece on their bucket list” says Chichi, “It’s a beautiful place and the food is amazing.” Travelling is part of your education. Observe life everywhere you go. Expand your vision through travel.   About the author: Joy Ehonwa is a writer and copy-editor who is passionate about relationships and self-development.
