The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the software product design industry for the better. It was the catalyst that led businesses to shift their focus towards becoming more digitally oriented. To adapt to the post-COVIDdigital world, the emphasis has also shifted to developing secure, scalable products that can withstand unexpected shocks.

Here are 4 trends in software product design that have emerged as a result of the digital transformation triggered by the pandemic.

Web 3.0

Since Web 3.0 first emerged in the digital landscape, it has stirred a lot of debate about the degree to which it can be regulated. As the third version of the internet, Web 3.0 is expected to facilitate decentralisation, incorporating technologies like blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and NFTs.

It was built with the goal of allowing users to control their data without having to rely on third parties like Facebook, Google, or Apple. Web 3.0 will be powered by AI, allowing it to provide more meaningful search results and more personalised online content to users.

This has an impact on software development since online software developers will need to learn new technologies and programming languages like Solidity, an object-oriented programming language used to write smart contracts, most notably on the Ethereum blockchain.

Accelerated Design Automation

With accelerated design automation, software developers and product managers can enhance development productivity by automating repetitive operations.

Design automation has progressed from basic parameter automation to full-scale product configuration. As a result, software engineers may now leverage rule-based design without having to write complicated code.

Design automation has become a top trend in 2022 thanks to the efficiency and cost-reducing benefits it can provide to software developers.

Increased Adoption of Software Bill of Materials (SBOM)

A software bill of materials, or SBOM, is an inventory of software and software dependencies required for the creation of software products.

It keeps track of licenses, updates and patches, and guarantees that software components are compatible.

An SBOM gives software firms a bird’s eye view of the software that goes into their products and helps them avoid software errors by ensuring that all dependencies are taken into consideration.

Software developers are increasingly using SBOMs, especially when it comes to open-source software. More software businesses will use a common format for SBOMs, such as CycloneDX, in 2022 and beyond to facilitate software management and cooperation.

DevSecOps

Cyberattacks are a looming threat to many companies around the world. Not only do these attacks cover a wide geographical range, but they’ve also grown more sophisticated and unpredictable. As a result, cloud providers and CISOs are facing more pressure than ever to provide the most robust security solutions imaginable. Modern organizations are increasingly relying on DevSecOps, which entails incorporating security processes, tools, and techniques across the software development life cycle, to enhance the cybersecurity mesh. This ensures that software is developed safely and that vulnerabilities are identified and corrected as soon as possible.

These software design trends offer a glimpse into the future of software product design: one where software products are designed to be safer, accessible, and more functional than they have ever been.
