connectnigeria-benefitrsoftakingawalk Taking a walk is one of the easiest and most effective exercises one can engage in. For someone like me who doesn’t like gruelling sessions at the gym, walking is one of my favourite ways to exercise. Apart from being easy to incorporate into your lifestyle, walking also has benefits on the physical and mental health of anyone. It helps mood enhancement; have you ever felt sad or angry and took a walk, then felt better? If you haven’t, you really need to try it. Taking a walk refreshes you, helps you get fresh air and focus. That is why, when two people are physically assaulting each other, they are separated and told to take a walk to calm down. It also improves brain power; according to the American Psychology Association, taking a walk helps better in a creative task, than sitting does. Any time I’m stuck while writing an article or doing some brainstorming, I leave my desk and take a five-minute walk. It gives me the clarity I need. I’m better able to concentrate on thinking without feeling stuck or helpless. I even look around my route to see if I can get any ideas to solve my problem. Taking a walk lets you focus, without pressure. It helps your thoughts flow freely and clearly. Taking a walk helps you keep fit as well. It is easy to get into a lifestyle with less movement when you work from home like me, or when you constantly drive anywhere you are going. Taking a walk at intervals helps keep you fit, exercise your body and repel fatigue. If you usually drive to and from work, you can incorporate walking into your lifestyle by taking a quick walk on a weekend morning. Try a few blocks away from your house and walk for at least five minutes. If you are not the gym type, or you can’t possibly fit a gym session into your schedule, try finding time to take a walk. Even if you are regular at the gym, taking a walk every now and then is a form of exercise that is both physically and mentally rewarding for the body.   About the author: Amina Salau is a writer and editor running The Illuminated Pen.
