Okoye is on his first international competition outing with the Super Eagles.

Nigerian national team goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, has expressed optimism towards the chances of the Super Eagles winning the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The Sparta Rotterdam of Holland shot-stopper made this disclosure during an interview with Brila FM before the Super Eagles departed for Garoua, Cameroon, the venue for all their group games. Okoye who sealed an English Premier League move to Watford FC of England stated that the Augustine Eguaveon led Super Eagles team are focused on their opening game against Mohammed Salah’s Pharaohs of Egypt on Tuesday, January 11, 2022. The tournament is Okoye’s first international competition with the Super Eagles and he will be looking forward to his time between the sticks when hostilities commence in the Central African country. “We are more focused on the trophy and nothing but the AFCON trophy,’’ Okoye said.

“I think it’s important how you enter the tournament, If you enter the tournament with a very good game then they already know about you…So I think the first game is going to be very important after that it’s just doing my thing and be at my best…It’s a team achievement, we want to get goals and also not concede goals but as goalkeepers, the less goals we concede, the more points for our team”.
Nigeria embarks on a quest for a fourth African title with the absence of key players such as Victor Osimhen (COVID-19), Leon Balogun (injury), Emmanuel Dennis (club refusal), and Odion Ighalo (club refusal).
