  Alhaji Mikhail Adisa Bashua, S.A.N., C.O.N. was fondly and popularly known as M.A.Bashua. He was regarded as an illustrious and eminent indigene of Isale Eko community of Lagos and looked upon as a mentor and father to so many. It is attested that during his lifetime, he was a man of simplicity, always smiling, hardly or never seen to be angry or upset with anyone but went about life, making achievements in every corner he turned.

A man who is characterised as an upright, patriotic and erudite legal practitioner, Mikhail Adisa Bashua worked for the growth, development and general wellbeing of the people both within his locality and without. He was a man who was so close to his community.

Background

Mikhail Adisa Bashua was born into the Bashua Chieftaincy family of Lagos in December 1929. He was called to the English Bar in 1960 and on his arrival in Nigeria, founded M.A. Bashua & Co., which he registered in 1968. He was enrolled in the Lincoln Inn. Incorporated on 02 August 1968 his law firm, M. A. BASHUA AND CO. celebrated 50th years anniversary in December 2018. The firm commenced operations at No. 45, Iga-Idunganran Street, then known as Reclamation Street, Lagos Island. The office was later moved to its present place at 218, Bamgbose Street, Lagos Island, in 1980. He was a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos Branch. He took Silk in 1997 and was elected member of the Federal House of Representatives, Lagos Constituency from 1962 till 1964. He was conferred with the national award, Commander of Order of the Niger (CON) in 2008.

His colleague in the legal practice, Justice Kazeem Alogba, the Chief Judge of Lagos State, in his tributes said the late Bashua as a lawyer contributed immensely to the legal profession and made giant strides in legal practice. He said,
“The deceased lawyer contributed greatly to the legal profession and so deserve to be honoured. His contributions to the development of law and law practice cannot be swept under the carpet. He was a legal practitioner exemplar.”
He was an erudite and patriotic legal practitioner and also a true barman in and outside the legal profession who mentored many legal practitioners “including those who are not his children.” The evidence of these immense contributions of M.A.Bashua to the development of law in the country and giant strides can be attested to by many legal practitioners and non-legal practitioners alike, stressing that a good number of the cases he handled in his lifetime became classical cases for resolving disputes.

Death

On the 19th of August 2021, Alhaji Mikhail Adisa Bashua took his last breath. A death that was regarded as a big loss to the legal practice in Nigeria, given that He was one of Nigeria’s oldest legal practitioners. Before his demise, he was the Olori Ebi of the Bashua’ Cheiftancy family and as well the Baba Oba of Lagos. Alhaji Mikhail Adisa Bashua, SAN was buried today in accordance with Moslem rites at the Vaults and Gardens, Ikoyi at 4 pm.
