Long Jump specialist, Ese Brume, achieved this feat after leaping a distance of 6.97m in her first jump and 6.79m in her final attempt to finish third and win a Bronze medal behind Germany’s Malaika Mihambo who won Gold with a 7.00m leap, and Brittney Reese of the United States who leapt 6.97m to win Silver on countback. So far, Nigeria has won two medals in the Olympics though it is not official yet as we await the final of the 68kg women’s wrestling where Blessing Oborodudu will be aiming for Gold or Silver in the worst case. Her final fight comes up today, Tuesday, August 3, 2021, by 10:15 am (WAT). In the women’s 62kg freestyle wrestling event, Nigeria’s hopes of another medal in the sport was dashed after Aminat Adeniyi, who despite leading 4-2, suffered a pinfall against Iryna Koliadenko of Ukraine to lose in the quarter-finals.

Patience Okon failed in another bid to win an Olympic medal in athletics for Nigeria after finishing 7th with a time of 52.41s in the heat 1 of women’s 400m event. Shaunae Miller-Uibo cruised to victory in a time of 50.50s, while Roxanna Gomez of Cuba finished second with a Personal Best of 50.76s, and Sada Williams finished third in 51.36s. However, Patience Okon will continue flying Nigeria’s flag high at the Olympics as she has been drafted into the Nigerian women’s 4x100m team and has been registered to compete in the event. Unless anything changes, the quartet of Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, Patience Okon, and Grace Nwokocha will embark on the quest to win Team Nigeria a medal in the women’s 4x100m event.
