The importance and delicacy of the eyes make them worth our extra care. In light of this, here are five ways you can maintain and improve your eyesight.
Take Breaks From Your Computer Screen
If you’re constantly staring at your computer screen, you’re probably straining your eyes. Excessive use of computers and other screen devices can lead to blurred vision and eye discomfort. Over time, it could make your vision poorer. Health experts recommend that you give your eyes an occasional break from these devices. They advocate the 20-20-20 rule, which means that you should look away from your screen and focus on an object that’s 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps to reduce eye strain. You might also want to get blue-light filter glasses. They are often effective at protecting your eyes from strain and dryness associated with prolonged exposure to computer screens.Increase Your Water Intake
Do this if your eyes are often dry or blurry. The natural fluid in your eyes washes away dirt when you blink. By staying hydrated, you’re maintaining fluid balance in the eyes, sustaining its cleaning function, and ensuring that your eyes stay healthy. It also has good effects on other body organs. Try to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. You might require more, depending on how much water you lose (i.e. how great your need to be rehydrated is).Consume More Essential Vitamins And Minerals
Nutritionists say that vitamins A, C, and E are important for eyesight, as are minerals like zinc and copper. They help prevent the degeneration of the part of the eye that controls central vision.Sign up to the Connect Nigeria daily newsletter
Other nutrients, including anti-oxidants, play this role as well. You can get these nutrients into your body by consuming red peppers, carrots, onions, garlic, sweet potatoes, and oranges. Try to supplement your diet with fish rich in omega-3-acid, including mackerel and sardine.
Exercise Regularly
Taking on cardiovascular exercises like cycling, jump rope, and organized sports may improve your eye health. That’s because they lower the pressure in your eyes, and protect cells in your retina. They also increase the flow of blood to your retina and optic nerve. In diabetic people, a lack of exercise could cause damage to the eye’s blood vessels. You can avoid this by keeping to an exercise routine. Eye exercises can also be beneficial. Some of these exercises include rubbing your palms together and placing them on your eyes; practising focus; massaging your temples; and rolling your eyes.Get Enough Sleep
Sleep gives your eyes a break from having to focus. It also allows tears to be replenished, so that your eyes remain hydrated. If you’re having a problem with dry eyes, it may be because you aren’t getting enough sleep. Other signs that you haven’t gotten adequate sleep include eye twitches or spasms, blurry vision, and increased sensitivity to light. How long should you sleep? Experts usually say 7-8 hours per night.Final Words
Your eyes contribute significantly to your well-being. Good eyes enable you to experience the shapes and colours of life.
