  Nigeria needs medicines. A lot of this demand is met by imports; annual pharmaceutical imports may have crossed the $700 million mark by 2018. However, local manufacturers are playing their part. Although the country’s pharmaceutical industry only has a few large players, more firms are stepping in to fill the supply gap that exists in the market.

One of the better-known companies in this sphere is Mopson Pharmaceuticals. For over forty years, they have provided essential pharmaceutical products to a growing consumer base. They continue to expand their offerings to the market, in the hope that Nigeria can reduce its dependence on foreign drug imports. Mopson takes its name from the initials of its founder, Michael Oyebanjo Paul. He is an experienced pharmacist who’s been involved in the industry for several decades. He’s also a Fellow of the West African Post-Graduate College of Pharmacists. Mr Michael remains involved in the running of the company as its Managing Director. Mopson began operations in 1977. It has grown its products from the few it started with, to more than a dozen different drugs. They are all registered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and certified by the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON).

The company’s products include cough syrup, paracetamol tablets, vitamin C syrup and tablets, multivitamin syrup, and folic acid syrup. There are also medicines designed for Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) ailments, gastrointestinal ulcers, and the relief of certain berating conditions in patients with Asthma. Mopson supplies its products to private and public hospitals and clinics in various parts of Nigeria. They are also available at independent drug stores. The brand has been recognized for the quality of its products by several important bodies. Awards they have won include Africa’s Best Cough Drug of the Year 2006 from the Institute of Direct Marketing of Nigeria; Award of Excellence by Rotary International District 9110 in 2002; and the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Award, 2015.
