In heat 1 of the men’s 100m event, Nigeria’s Usheoritse Itsekiri clinched a semi-final spot after finishing third in a time of 10.15s. Ronnie Baker won the heat in a time of 10.03s, while Jimmy Vicaut finished second in 10.7s. Enoch Adegoke took his brilliant run of form to Tokyo after winning heat 2 of the men’s 100m event. In a winning time of 9.98s (Personal Best), Adegoke made history as the 11th Nigerian to go under 10 seconds as Nigeria became the third-fastest country in the world.

Nigeria which has produced eleven sub 10s runners trails the United States which have produced 62 sub 10s runners, and Jamaica, 20 sub 10s runners. Nigeria’s Olympic dreams suffered another major blow after Divine Oduduru, due to a false start was disqualified from the heat 5 of the men’s 100m event. In what has been described as an unfair decision by analysts owing to the fact that Reece Prescod of Great Britain was not disqualified for the same mistake, it is left to see if Nigeria would protest the decision to permit Oduduru to run by himself and beat the time set by others in the heat 5 in other to qualify for the semi-final.
