Welcome to the month of July! The last 6 months have been eventful and progressive in Nigeria and we look forward to another six months of fantastic achievements by Nigerians at home and in Diaspora. Some amazing things have happened from January to June this year. Here are some favourites:
1. After the election results were announced, the incumbent government embodied in the person of President Jonathan, conceded defeat and congratulated Gen. Muhammadu Buhari. This is the most obvious and talked about ‘first’.
2. #JegaTime and “Jega-ed” were introduced. We have the witty Nigerian humour to thank for the latest additions to our slang dictionary. Jega Time (a play on “Nigerian time”) was coined from Jega’s unpunctuality in re-emerging after temporary suspension of election result announcements. Jega-ed on the other hand is defined below – based on Jega’s now famous reaction to Orubebe’s public outcry.
3. How can we mention Jega’s response without including what set it off in the first place, giving birth to another slang
“Orubebetisis”?
4. The introduction of the Permanent Voters’ Card and card readers to curb electoral rigging.
5.
Drones were reportedly launched by People’s Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje in an effort to monitor ongoing activity at the state’s various polling units.
6. Connect Nigeria held its 2nd annual Business Fair themed ‘e-Business and the Growth of Your Enterprise’ on February 21st 2015 and it saw a turn out of over 5,000 people, surpassing that of 2013.
7. Connect Nigeria held its 2nd Writers’Conference on Saturday, 18th April, 2015 at Protea Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos.
8. President Goodluck Jonathan passed the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) into law. The new law prohibits female circumcision or genital mutilation, forceful ejection from homes, harmful widowhood practices, abandonment of spouse, children and other dependents without sustenance, battery and harmful traditional practices.
9. Smile Communications Nigeria and auto service firm Metro-taxi activated free Wi-Fi in over 200 Metro-taxis in Lagos.
10. ConnectNigeria.com, in partnership with OneDot Photography, held the
first Phone Photography Conference in Nigeria, in line with its ongoing #1MillionSMEs campaign.
