  Applications are now open for the YALI 2022 Mandela Washington Fellowship. The program offers its beneficiaries a fully-funded opportunity to participate in a six-week Leadership Institute at a US College or University, and engage with US citizens and other Fellows.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is organized as part of the US Government’s Young Africans Leadership Initiative (YALI). To date, more than 5,000 young leaders from across Africa have participated in it. The program targets people aged between 25 and 35 years old, who have worked to achieve a positive developmental impact in their communities. In 2022, the YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship will select 700 young leaders from Africa and provide them with a chance to further develop their skills at an institute organized at a US University or College.

Benefits

Applicants selected for the fellowship will benefit in the following ways:
  • Participate in a six-week leadership institute in the United States, where they will also interact with other Fellows
  • Broaden their expertise by engaging with industries outside their domain of expertise
  • Attend a conference in Washington DC, along with other Fellows
  • Meet US government officials and leaders in business and civil society in that country
  • Make new, valuable connections

Eligibility

Intending applicants are expected to meet the following conditions before applying:
  • Must be between the ages of 25 and 35 on or before the deadline for application
  • Not US citizens or permanent residents of the United States
  • Should be proficient at reading, writing, and speaking English
  • Not employees or immediately related to employees of the US Government (US embassy or consulate, USAID, or other US government entity
  • Should not be alumni of the Mandela Washington Fellowship

The Lead-Up To The Fellowship

Applications will remain open until September 15, 2021. Between November 2021 and January 2022, semi-finalists will be interviewed by local US embassies and consulates. Applicants will be notified of their status late in March. In May 2022, finalists will be will have their visas processed, and will receive a pre-departure orientation. The fellowship will begin in the United States in June 2022. Again, the deadline for applications is Wednesday, September 15, 2021.
