interstate road travel safety tips. Such as
- Schedule travel trips between 9 am and 4 pm each day. Don’t leave too early or too late.
- When driving, focus and ensure there is traffic on the returning lane every 5-7mins. Don’t drive more than 100km/hour so you can make timely decisions, look out for traps and appreciate the terrain. Even if you are not the one driving, put your phone down and keep your eye on the road.
- Remove titles from your phone contacts. E.g. Hon., Alhaji, Chief, Inspector, or the title of any ranking officer.

- Don’t use tinted sheets on your car windows. It sends the wrong message that you are a uniform or high profiled person, which makes you a target.
- Always have a spare tyre, plug, and fuel pump in your car. You never know when you might need them.
- Moving into a convoy does not guarantee your safety. It no longer intimidates criminal elements.
- If you feel the need to ease yourself or stop to buy food, do so in a town or a village.
- On COVID-19, not travelling at all is the number one choice. But if the trip cannot wait, then travelling by (private) car is the number two best option. This way, you will control your environment and practice social distancing better. If you are unvaccinated, not travelling is a better option. Even with vaccination, know that travelling by train, bus, or aeroplane is still quite risky because the new variants are more contagious.
- Monitor breaking news on local news channels. And adjust your plans if need be. We know DSTV brings a wide range of channels, but listening to the news from your local TV stations would give you a clearer picture of what’s truly happening around you.
