The Japan Africa Dream Scholarship provides high-achieving Africans with the chance to study in Japan, and acquire knowledge and skills that they can contribute towards the development of their home countries. Launched in 2017 by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Japan, the scholarship exists to strengthen human capacity in five key areas that the AfDB targets, represented by the bank’s High 5 agenda: “Feed Africa”, “Light Up Africa”, “Industrialize Africa”, “Integrate Africa”, and “Improve the quality of life of the people of Africa.” Following these objectives, the scholarship will cover studies in agriculture, engineering, health, energy, and environmental sustainability, at universities specified for the program.

Persons selected for the JADS program will enjoy these benefits:
  • Funding for economy class air travel between their home country and the host university at the beginning and end of the program.
  • Tuition for their graduate program.
  • Monthly subsistence allowance covering living expenses (including books).
  • Basic health insurance coverage.

Eligibility

Applicants should meet these criteria to be considered for the scholarship:
  • Be a citizen of an AfDB member country (Nigeria being one).
  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the specified areas, obtained at least a year before the application deadline.
  • Have at least a year of development-related experience after earning a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Be accepted to enrol at a JADS partner university for the upcoming academic year.
  • Not be a staff (or close relative to a staff) of the AfDB.

Application Process

The application process should proceed as described below: Step One: Applicants request information and application forms and procedures from the JADS partner university they chose. For enquiries, they can contact jads@afdb.org. Step Two: Applicants fill the required documents and submit them to the universities. Step Three: The university assesses and selects qualified candidates from the pool of applicants. Step Four: Universities submits a selected list of selected candidates to the AfDB. Step Five: AfDB examines the submitted list and approves a final list of candidates who will receive scholarships. Step Six: AfDB contacts selected scholarship awardees and notify the universities.
