You hear the beautiful sounds and catchy lyrics that emanate from a song; you may even be conversant with the musicians who sing them but have you ever stopped for a moment to consider who the masterminds are behind those beautiful melodies you hear.
These music producers may be behind the scenes but they determine to a large extent the quality of music that is being produced and how successful they become. Here are five of them that are on top of their game when it comes to producing music.
Cobhams Asuquo
Although Cobams Asuquo may not have received as much mainstream recognition like the other producers on this list, he has definitely held his own as a stellar producer, making classic hit songs by Asa like “Fire on the mountain” and “Mr Jailer”. His work with artists such as Waje, Omawumi, Timi Dakolo, Banky W and others shows that he doesn’t follow the conventional trends that define modern day music but has created a niche for himself to better suit a particular audience. Cobams is definitely one of a kind in the music industry and is revered both at home and abroad for his unique sound.

A pioneer music producer and also a musician, Don Jazzy has stood the test of time in the music industry. His music production career spans as far back as the days of the defunct Mo’Hits Records (which included him, D’banj, Dr Sid and to the current Mavins records which he formed and comprises of music stars like Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Di’ja and Iyanya. Don Jazzy is the brain behind most of the songs released by Mavins Records. He is not hard to recognise once you start hearing the tagline “It’s Don Jazzy again”. Don Jazzy definitely adds “spice” and “flare” and that’s why he has remained a class act among music producers in Nigeria.

Sess
“Sess the problem kid” – this is the tagline you will hear in a lot of rapper Falz’s songs. This is because Sess has been responsible for the production of a large percentage of the rapper’s body of work. Interestingly he and Falz have an incredible chemistry when it comes to making music and perhaps this is due to the fact the duo are both lawyers who delved into music after being “called to bar”. Aside from his impressive work with Falz and other musicians, Sess has also worked on his own solo efforts such as “Bestest” featuring Vector, “Don’t Worry” with Spax and the most recent “Omo Muda” album.
