The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has picked Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Capital as the World Book Capital City for 2014. The selection of Port Harcourt was done by a coalition of reading groups in its effort to restore habitual reading culture in Nigeria. Alongside Port Harcourt, Rainbow Book Club (RBC) and other book clubs got credit for “promoting the culture of reading for entertainment and information among senior secondary and senior primary school students.” Books selected by the RBC for secondary school students include Chimeka Garricks’ Tomorrow Died Yesterday, and Kaine Agary’s Yellow-Yellow. Primary schools include Fatima Pam’s The Young Adventurers, Achebe and Iroaganachi’s How the Leopard Got His Claws and Dan Fulani’s Dead Men’s Bones.
