People paint on different surfaces, on wood, glass, paper, canvas, walls. Each surface you paint on has a certain kind of paint you use on it. Here are beginner tips on some of the items you need in painting.
1. Paint: Oil and acrylic paints:
The oil paint is slow in drying because it is thick, it can be used to give your painting a 3D effect. Since it takes a long time to dry, it provides the artist more time to work with creations and make changes. This slow drying process can be seen as an advantage to some artist and to some other, a disadvantage.
The acrylic (water based paint) dries up very quickly which makes blending and wet on wet painting technique difficult. But its fast drying process and odorless characteristic are preferred advantages.
Do not paint in a confined space. Look for a comfortable place with lots of space and good ventilation because the oil paint emits an upsetting smell. If you are going to paint on the ground, spread old newspapers or old clothes, to prevent paint from dripping on the ground.
2. Brushes:
In choosing a brush, you must consider the size, shape of the bristle and the material it is made from. There are large, medium, and small sized brushes, sable brushes (made from the tail of a weasel), round brushes, flat brushes, pointed end brushes and so on. Purchase the brushes to suit your need. It is necessary to buy a quality brush because some of them have their bristles fall out while painting, making your work look untidy.
3. Canvas:
You can purchase an already made canvas from an art store or prepare one yourself. The canvas is a platform on which you sketch or paint on.
4. Linseed oil:
It is used for mixing oil paints to give your work a glossy look.
5. Pencil:
For sketching on canvas
6. A Box for Storing Your Brushes and Colors:
You will also need a deep small plate for putting water for acrylic paint or kerosene for oil paint. These liquids are used for rinsing off the paint from your brush during or after painting.
A lack of previous experience should not hinder you from painting. If you have the passion for it then you are good to go. For beginners, it might take a while before you get the hang of things. Just be patient. Color is key to painting. Knowing your color schemes and how to combine them to complement each other is the trickiest part of painting. If you know your colors then you have no problems with painting.
Furthermore, digital art is an important aspect of art. It worthwhile to incorporate your works with digital art. Applications like Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator or other art software will be helpful.
