Amazing-Grace Ighedo’s life transformed as a result of one car accident and a career change. At age 16,  she enrolled in college and made the decision not to study science because she did not think that she was smart enough for it. She went ahead to study French and for seven years after getting the degree, she worked for an oil and gas company but didn’t feel comfortable about her career choice. But one day, she had a car accident and that exposed her to the nurses’ care when she was admitted which made her want to become a nurse. When she moved into the United States in 2009, she began to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. With her husband’s encouragement, the 33-year-old mother of three began taking classes at Kirkwood Community College and got a job at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as a telemetry technician. She enrolled for Nursing at Mount Mercy University in the fall of 2013. This year, she became a recipient of the Outstanding Student Scholarship through the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nursing Associations. She is set to graduate from the Mount Mercy University this coming fall. One of her professors and the Chair of the Department of Nursing at Mount Mercy University, Dr. Mary Tarbox says she couldn’t be prouder of Amazing-Grace. She continues, “We know that when she gets an award like this, she’ll do something with it. She’ll use it to progress in her career and be an outstanding nurse.”

  • I am the proud father of Amazing Grace. The mum and I are so grateful to God for her great achievement and recognition. When she left the shores of this country six years ago, before she ever settled down to chose a career I sent her a text and said “Amazing Grace u will shine in white man’s country”.

I did not know what made me say so. But glory to God she has kept shining.
