  US-based Nigerian computer scientist Chinasa Okolo has been included in Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in artificial intelligence. Time Magazine revealed this in a video posted on its website on Thursday, September 5, 2024. The magazine noted that Okolo, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, made significant contributions to sections of the International Scientific Report on the Safety of Advanced AI led by Yoshua Bengio, as well as to Nigeria’s national AI strategy and the African Union’s strategy for responsible AI adoption.

Time Magazine praised Chinasa Okolo for raising awareness about the immense benefits that AI could bring to the African continent through her research and efforts. The global publication also mentioned that her research has served in the detection of floods and crop diseases as well as in preventing digitally enabled harassment on microlending platforms.

“Through these endeavours and her research, she is raising awareness about the benefits using AI could bring to countries across Africa—including the detection of floods and crop diseases—as well as its potential harms, such as digitally-enabled harassment on microlending platforms,”
Time Magazine said. Reacting to the achievement, the Nigerian was full of optimism and noted that “AI could help fuel socioeconomic development that has been much needed in Africa for the last half-century.”

She was also concerned that this competition could limit the autonomy of African countries and perpetuate neo-colonial practices that have negatively impacted their economies.
