Climate change activists in Nigeria are planning a 12-man walk from Abuja through Niger, Mali, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Benin to Lagos. Organisers say they intend to use the walk to raise awareness, on climate change effects involving a 3,400km trek from Nigeria to Mali.
The program director of ‘Walk to Mali’ Oludotun Babayemi said, “The farming communities are victims of environmental degradation and need to develop strategies to cope with deforestation, increased flooding and other impacts of climate change. We are not the most emitters of carbon dioxide, but we are left to adapt to what is happening right now, one of which is flooding. So we need to learn how to adapt to these kinds of situations.”
The walk will involve travel by foot and rides with humanitarian organizations. The public relations manager of Walk to Mali, Hamzat Lawal, said, “So in that process we are reaching out to millions of people. We are going to tell them what is actually happening in their region and how they can contribute to sustainable development over time.”
Talking about the walk, he said, “Definitely it is going to be dangerous, but if you look at the impact and outcome, then it is worth it.”
