Nigerians have been known to do well for themselves and break every glass ceiling set by others. This has never been truer than in the last week when we had the first Nigerian Google Developer Expert for Android.
The Google Developer Expert is a global program to recognize individuals who are experts and thought leaders in one or more Google technologies. These professionals actively contribute and support the developer and startup ecosystems around the world, helping them build and launch highly innovative apps. The most common trait all Google Developer Expert have is the habit of sharing knowledge with people irrespective of the size of the platform they have. They usually are running a knowledge-sharing channel on YouTube, designing code labs, content creators for blogs, speakers at events and basically every way they can share information and knowledge with others.

In a tweet on November 6, 2019, Moyinoluwa Adeyemi, the first Nigerian to be certified as a Google Developer Expert for Android, shared the news of her certification.
Moyinoluwa started her tech journey with a degree in Computer Science with Mathematics from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. With the experience she garnered in her early days, she mentored junior developers and planned the TEDx Ife event as the Admissions Manager and Event Developer. She also was the team lead for the Google Developers Group (GDG) at OAU. She has also co-organized some of the Lagos Google Developers Group conferences and events.
Over the years, she has continued to contribute to the tech ecosystem in different ways and this achievement is not only a feather to her cap but also an achievement for the Google Developers Group in Nigeria.
The achievement of being a Google Developers Expert comes with a lot of perks and benefits beyond money. First, all GDEs are featured on the directory page and have a public profile on the program website. Secondly, the experts are part of a closed community where members share learnings and best practices. Next, they have access to other experts at Google and can participate in exclusive projects with Google, like collaborating on content creation, mentoring and speaking at GD events. And best of all, they get priority invitation to Google-led events such as Google I/O and are sponsored to attend the Yearly Experts Summit.
While this may seem like a difficult feat to some, this achievement is not exactly that easy yet it’s not impossible. Here are some few things to consider in order to be a Google Developer Expert:
