According to TechCabal, Lagos and 60 cities in the North Central region of Nigeria will be receiving improved broadband services in the planned project by the licensed Infrastructure companies (InfraCos). Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria will be handled by MainOne Cable while IHS as been licensed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to focus on the North Central states: Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau and FCT Abuja. The Minister of Communications Technology, Dr. Omobola Johnson reportedly said “as part of Nigeria’s drive to attract additional investments into the country’s vibrant Information Communications Technology (ICT) industry, the country would be focusing on the Open Access Model, which has been adopted for the licensing round. Beneficiaries of the licenses shall get tax holidays to encourage the Infracos to invest and guarantee adequate returns on investments.” MainOne Cable has already installed submarine cable and Tier III data centre in Lagos but will now also provide broadband infrastructure to over 20 million Lagosians.
