In this post, I will be sharing with you tips from my over 13 years of experience working as a digital content manager and consultant, on how to choose the perfect domain name for your brand. When I say ‘perfect’ here, I don’t just mean picking something catchy but finding a name that represents your brand, resonates with your audience, and supports your business goals. Irrespective of what your brand is – whether personal, business, or corporate – these tips apply to you as your domain name serves as a powerful tool in your digital marketing strategy.

Key Tips for Choosing the Perfect Domain Name

1. Keep It Short and Simple

When choosing a domain name for your brand, one of the golden rules you must keep in mind and abide by is to keep it short and simple. Long, complicated names are not only hard to remember but also prone to spelling mistakes when typed into browsers. A short and straightforward domain name, such as “Jumia.com” or “Konga.com,” is easier to recall and quickly becomes synonymous with your brand. Instead of “oluwababatunde.com”, consider “tunde.com”. Aim for a name that is concise, easy to pronounce, and effortlessly spelt.

2. Make It Brandable

Your domain name should reflect your brand’s identity. It needs to be unique and aligned with your business’s mission and values. A brandable domain name stands out because it sounds professional and distinctive. Think of names that are catchy and represent what your business does without being too literal. For example, “Paystack.com” is not only memorable but also suggests something related to payments, fitting the business’s purpose perfectly.

3. Avoid Numbers and Hyphens

One of the things I always advise my clients is to avoid numbers and hyphens. This is because numbers and hyphens often confuse users. For instance, if your domain name is “fashion4you.com,” people might get confused if it’s “for”, “4” or “four.” Hyphens can make your website look less credible and are also easy to forget. A domain like “fashion-for-you.com” is cumbersome to type and difficult to communicate verbally. When you keep your domain name clean and free of numbers or hyphens, it enhances its professionalism and ease of use.

4. Use Keywords Wisely

You’ve probably heard of keywords and how important they are to your SEO score. Using relevant keywords in your domain name can improve your search engine ranking and help your audience understand your business at a glance. For example, if you run a bakery, including words like “bake” or “cake” in your domain name can boost your SEO. However, it’s important not to overdo it; stuffing your domain name with too many keywords can make it look suspicious and spammy. Instead, opt for a balanced approach that integrates one main keyword naturally.

5. Consider Your Target Audience

When choosing a new domain name, it’s important to think about who your target audience is. Are you targeting Nigerian customers specifically, or is your audience international? If your business serves only Nigerians, then it will serve you better to use local terms that they can relate to easily or that can make a better impression on them. This is one of the factors that has helped “nairaland” remain relevant to this day.

6. Check for Availability and Trademarks

Before finalizing your domain name, ensure it’s available and not infringing on existing trademarks. First, enter your chosen name on search engines like Google and Bing and be sure it is not already being used. You can also visit the CAC portal and do a public search with the name to be sure no business has it registered as their business. You won’t want your website to be associated with any business or to pass your website authority and reputation to a business that’s not your own. Second. use domain name search tools like Namecheap or GoDaddy to check availability and ensure that your chosen name is not already in use or too similar to a well-known brand. This step is important to avoid legal issues and protect your brand from potential conflicts down the road.
  1. Choose the Right Domain Extension

Many struggle with choosing between domain extensions. While .com is the most popular domain extension, there are numerous options available. The general rule is this, for businesses, use .com and for organisations, use .org. If your business is serving only Nigerians, it may be cheaper and better to go for .ng extensions than .com. A .com domain might be ideal for international appeal, while a .ng extension can signal that your business is proudly Nigerian. Consider your business goals and audience when selecting the most suitable domain extension.
