How to Choose a Travel Buddy

Punch On The Web

Travelling is dynamic and no matter how much you plan, things can go awry. For starters, a travel buddy needs to have character traits such as adaptability, tolerance and problem-solving skills. The person(s) can roll with the punches, stay calm in the face of crisis, and think quick to find solutions to problems.

Choose Someone You Have a Lot In Common With

Sure no two persons are alike but what keeps us as friends is common interests or ideologies. So pick someone who has a similar or complimentary interest, energy level, or even dietary commitments as you. If you like adventurous activities like hiking, kayaking, boat cruising, snorkelling, zip lining, and the like, choose a friend who shares your passion. Don’t travel with a historian who prefers visiting slave trade museums and points of no return in Lagos or Calabar when you want to spend a weekend at Kajuru Castle in Kaduna hiking, swimming and chilling. If you are a night owl, choose a fellow night owl to accompany you. Bottom line, choose someone who loves travelling as much as you do and has had a similar tour experience. Also, choose someone open to enjoying the same experiences as you, even if it is their first time.

Enjoy Each Others Company

How often do you hang out with your friend and when you do, do you enjoy every moment of the time spent together? Do you enjoy being with this friend in a variety of situations? There is nothing better than spending quality time with someone who appreciates it. And a travel buddy should be someone who prizes bonding during time spent together. That way when you get a curve ball, like hiking longer than expected, you both can make the experience worthwhile.

Go With Someone with Whom You Have a Honest Relationship

The last thing you want to do is pretend about who you are all the time. Choose someone who feels like family to you; who you can be truly open with. If you do, having discussions on budget/finances won’t feel weird. Choose someone who you understand their motives and how they think. Keeping communication lines open is important in any relationship, including among travel companions.

Sign Up For a Group Tour

If you don’t have an available travel partner who meets all these requirements, fret not. Sign up for a group tour with a travel operator/tour guide and make new friends during the trip. If you are lucky, you will meet a few people who match the criteria listed above and are willing to have you as a travel buddy for another trip.   Featured Image Source: Punch On The Web
