In Nigeria, a few millennials and Gen-Z have been able to turn the economy around to suit them a little by becoming freelancers, but not everyone will freelance. The 9-5 life is still very much in existence and really hasn’t lost relevance. Are you interested in a field? Do you want to climb up the corporate ladder? Then, you need a job! Make your research, submit an application and wait for the big day – your interview! Crushing your interview requires that you come prepared, let’s discuss a few things to do.
- Arrive Early: You need to start off with a great impression. Arriving at the venue at least 30 minutes before leaves you on the safe side. If it’s a virtual interview, join the call at least 10 minutes before, and wait for the interviewer. It gives off the impression that you’re thorough and helps you to get settled in.
- Make Research: You really don’t want to be asking the interviewer what the organization does during your interview. Knowing what the organization does is not enough. You need to be thorough, see what value you can offer if you get employed and sell it to them when you get the chance to.
- Dress Appropriately For The Occasion: You might want to consider wearing subtle colours that make you look laid-back and calm from a reasonable distance. Wearing too many bright flamboyant colours make you the centre of attraction. You really wouldn’t want the interviewer staring at your clothing during the course of the interview process.

In any case, you’re joining virtually, maintain a clear background that makes your face the only element.
- Have Your Resume Or Portfolio Handy: Yes. It is a digital age and your application has been sent. You might assume they have all of this information but what if they don’t? What if it has been lost or they never looked through? When going for a physical interview, always have a copy of your resume or portfolio. If it’s virtual, you could have it opened on a tab, just in case.
- Connect With Your Recruiters: Before applying, you probably need to check out the top guns working there, connect and engage with their content prior to your big day. It’s quite important as you get to pick up a few things about the individual and the organization, itself.
- Make Good Use Of Body language: Speak from a position of someone with value. Talk about your experiences and expertise with confidence. It boosts your interviewer’s confidence in you. Trust me, they see these things.
- Have A Figure In Mind Just In Case: It might get to the point of negotiating your salary. Your recruiter(s) might throw it at you. You should have a range at least from research about industry pricing as well as the organization’s range (if you find it). It’s best that you present a range first, but if you can push that they present their price first, please, do.
