Speaking at his unveiling as the Guinness Nigeria PLC ambassador for the ‘Made of Black’ campaign, Thierry Henry described former Nigerian international, Nwankwo Kanu, as the most technically gifted African player he ever played with at Arsenal.
The event which took place at the Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Sunday was a first of it’s kind, and it featured fans interaction with Henry, a media press conference and a session where the former France international was taught how to cook Nigeria’s jollof rice, which he also ate.
The former Arsenal skipper Thierry Henry joined former Super Eagles top gun, Nwankwo Kanu at Arsenal in August 1999 (Kanu joined the Gunners in February), and spent five years as teammates, winning two Premier League titles in 2002 and 2004 and a back to back FA Cup win in 2002 and 2003.
The duo parted ways in 2004 when Kanu moved to West Bromwich Albion. Henry, on the other hand, left Arsenal in 2007.
Henry disclosed to the media that, “First of all, let me say Lauren was very good and I love Lauren to bits. But if you go down to technique, I have to give it to Kanu”
“It’s just the truth. Kanu was an underrated player, so humble, nice guy, everything about him was positive. We all know that famous turn (Kanu’s dribbling style) that he had, even watching him on television, I was learning (Kanu’s dribbling style). He was always good and a good guy too.” He continued.
“Like I said, if we go down to technique, Kanu was very good. Kolo Toure was very tough, Lauren had good technique too until he was moved to right-back.” Henry added.
