All fingers are not equal. True but the fourth fingers are more equal than the others, —-to borrow from George Orwell’s Animal Farm.
The fourth finger is symbolized as the Ring Finger either for weddings or engagement. In Indian, the wedding ring is worn on the right hand because they believe the left hand is ill-fated. Have you stopped to wonder why the wedding ring is placed on the left ring finger? This is a practice common to the Westerners and adopted in Nigeria. This is because a long time ago, before the understanding of medical science on circulatory system of the body, most people believe that a vein runs directly from the heart to the left ring finger. Hence, the Latin name of the finger, ‘vena amoris’ described this hand to heart connection. The name, ‘vein of love’ symbolizes the connection. The ring finger is associated with Earth’s moon, creativity and beauty as well as a romantic relationship. Traditionally, the wedding ring finger symbolizes the strength of the marriage, but hey, not everyone is right handed.
