Nigeria’s ICT community has been thrown into mourning following the death of Florence Seriki, founder and CEO of Omatek Computers. Mrs. Seriki is reported to have died on Saturday, at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Her death has been attributed to complications resulting from pancreatic cancer. She was aged 54.

Seriki was known for the pioneering role she played in Nigeria’s ICT sector. Omatek Ventures, which she founded about 25 years ago, is a major local manufacturer of computers and other ICT related devices.  Omatek is said to be the first company in Africa to locally assemble computer cases, speakers, keyboards and other computer accessories.

An engineer by training, Seriki was a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Nigerian Computer Society (NCS), and Institute of Directors (IoD). She was also a former president of the Information Technology Association of Nigeria (ITAN).

In his reaction to the news of Seriki’s passing on, president of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Olusola Teniola, said that her death was “very shocking and unfortunate for the IT industry as a whole,” and described her as a great contributor to the development of local content in the industry.

On his part, former president of ITAN, Mr. Chris Uwaje, said Seriki’s demise was “a bad blow to ICT professionals in Nigeria,” and called on the government to ensure that “innovations of great entrepreneurs like Seriki would not die with them.”
