Amongst us, we see individuals that have made their mark, we see those that will never be forgotten and we see the ones that command other people without hesitation. What makes this set of individuals so different from the rest of us is the amount of power that they wield. It is the amount of authority that they have over other human beings. There is a part of everyone that wants to command and wield power over others. With proper grooming and discipline, anyone can rise to positions of power and authority, however, there are some major rules to follow and abide by, these are:
- Work hard: This goes without saying and it is common knowledge that in order to get to greater heights and be able to stand above other people, one has to work hard. Do not sleep unless you have completed the stipulated work for the day and more. Only when you have achieved your aim can you afford to rest and play.
- Never underestimate your rival: In order to be above others, one has to be able to do what they cannot. Underestimating or looking down on rivals will not put you above them, you have to know the kind of people you are competing with, their weaknesses, their strengths and their aspirations. Only when you know your opponent can you beat him.
- Do not be afraid to fight dirty: Powerful people did not get to where they are by being nice and complacent. They acquired their positions by fighting tooth and nail for what they believe in and in order to win, they are not afraid to punch below the belt. This might not necessarily mean doing illegal things but it certainly means doing the essential ones.
- Watch your back: They say unity is strength, but many a time, empires have crumbled as a result of inside force. As you keep fighting outside opposition, keep a close watch on the people that surround you so as to be able to detect and crush any internal rebellion or opposition that might try to come up.
- Trust no one: We all know what happened to Samson who trusted his wife Delilah in the Bible. Betrayal happens everywhere, do not trust anyone apart from yourself. If it is absolutely necessary to trust someone, make sure you know their Achilles’ heel as well in case they one day decide to betray you.
Power is something we all want to have, but the above rules should be dutifully followed in order to get and retain that power. When it is gotten, it must be managed in a way that will help and not hurt the society at large.
