The year 2019 was a great year for the Nigerian music industry. It witnessed the rise of several young artistes who are making very good music, broke into the Nigerian mainstream and are carving a niche for themselves. This list includes Zlatan, Teni among others. Also, the year has been prominent for many big artistes like Burna Boy who won the BET Awards for Best International Act and nominated for the Grammy Awards in 2020, Davido, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Mr Eazi and the list goes on of artistes attaining amazing feats in the international scene.

However, in 2020, here is a highlight of some five Nigerian artistes to look out for, not arranged in a particular order:

Joeboy

The emPawa-star, Joeboy is known for his Banku Music style. In November 2019, he released his debut EP, Love & Light, Joeboy and it has been banging the airwaves especially his new track taken off the EP titled, All For You. This is following his record success since his song, Baby that brought about his big break. He used the investment money from Mr Eazi’s emPawa initiative to film and produce the music video for the song. With the help of emPawa distribution, the song has recorded 18million on Youtube plays to hit the single to No. 1 spot across Nigeria and some other African countries on Apple Music. Joeboy has not relented, he is sure pushing the boundaries and 2020 should be a blast for him. Here is one of the favourite songs released in March 2019 by Joeboy titled Baby

Fireboy DML

In November 2019, Fireboy DML released his no-feature debut album, Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps (LTG) and reactions have been positive. The 23-year-old YBNL signed artiste has been making remarkable music; and in 2019, his music earned him several award nominations in different categories. With so much to offer and Olamide’s strategic leadership of the YBNL label, Fireboy DML is one artiste to expect to continue to do great music and attain remarkable feats in 2020. Buju

This Afro-Fusion singer, Buju (originally named Daniel Benson) is regarded as the next big thing in contemporary Afro-beat. Therefore, 2020 holds lots of great promises for Buju in the Nigerian music industry. The artiste, despite the challenges of being independent, is effectively utilizing and optimizing his social media and digital platforms to post his captivating freestyles and music, which has won the hearts of music lovers. In 2018, he released some singles ranging from A Day in Lagos, Call You, Catch A Vibe, Cool Kids and Wahala. However, on 29 November 2019, singing in his with his sonorous voice, he released a single, Spiritual featuring Zlatan and shot the video and there have only been positive responses to the music video on YouTube. Oxlade

Also known as Boy Ox, the 22-years old Nigerian artiste is started his journey into music from his church choir. The young talented singer is ready to take the Nigerian music industry by storm. In 2019, alongside dropping songs, he has collaborated in features too. After hearing one of his single, Blackbonez reached out to him and featured him in a song, Mamiwota. By December, he collaborated with Reekado Banks in a single titled, Craze. Despite the fact that the challenges he has encountered have influenced his decision to want to give up on music, he has received words of encouragement from other artistes, including Davido who have heard his music. Boy Ox believes he will be a legend and the year 2020 is definitely a great year for him. Below is one of his singles, Shugar:

Tems

Tems is one of the favourites to watch out for in 2020, especially for her unique style of music, alternative music. Dubbed by the Acceleratetv as the “Queen of the alternative scene,” Tems, originally named Temilade Openiyi, is changing the music scene with her unique sound and style since the release of Mr Rebel. She has been very consistent with her releases and is seen as one of the “one of the most exciting up-and-comers.” In 2019, she dropped her third single, Try Me which came with her first-ever music video. The song is a hit and its music video, fitting. 2020 holds amazing promises for this courageous and talented artiste and she is definitely one of the Nigerian artistes to be on the lookout for.
