What would we do without our hair styling products? Creams, oils, gels, mousses, relaxers, shampoos, and conditioners play important roles in hair care and styling. However, a product buildup resulting from accumulated use over time can cause more harm than good.

When the scalp and hair are laden with grease and residue from hair care products, they trap dirt and prevent hair follicles from receiving nourishment and moisture. Thus, one could be using these products without experiencing any positive effect on the hair. You can easily overcome hair care product buildup by using any of these:

Baking soda

Mix baking soda and water to get a slightly pasty solution. After washing and rinsing off hair with your regular shampoo, massage the baking soda solution through your scalp. Allow for about 5 minutes and rinse off thoroughly with water. Condition your hair afterwards.

Lemon juice

Squeeze lemon juice into a small bowl of water (this should be about 1 tablespoon in 450-500ml). After washing and rinsing your hair with shampoo, pour the lemon juice mixture and massage through your hair and scalp. Rinse off with water after two minutes then condition your hair. Note that lemon juice can change the colour of hair so you may want to try another means instead.

Vinegar (Apple cider, preferably)

Depending on the amount you need, mix equal volumes of vinegar and water. After washing and conditioning, massage through your hair. Leave on for about two minutes and rinse off with water. Alternatively, mix 1 part of vinegar in 8 parts of water and rinse off finally with the vinegar solution after washing with shampoo.

Furthermore, avoid washing your hair excessively to avoid loss of essential oils and moisture. It is adequate to remove buildup once a month.
