  As Nigerian Muslim faithful edge closer to the completion of the Ramadan (Islamic Holy Fast) period, the federal government has declared Wednesday, May 12, and Thursday, May 13, 2021, as public holidays to mark the celebrations of Eid-el-Fitr in 2021.

Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, on behalf of the government made the declaration on Monday, May 10, 2021. Aregbesola in an official statement congratulated Nigerian Muslims on the celebrations and urged Nigerians residing in the country and the ones abroad to use the period of celebrating Eid-el-Fitr to pray for peace, stability, and economic transformation in Nigeria. Opining that development is not attainable in a rancorous atmosphere, Aregbesola advised Nigerians to be law-abiding and embrace the teachings of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) on love, self-discipline, kindness, and tolerance.

On the present state of insecurity in Nigeria, the minister urged security agencies to remain courageous and patriotic in the discharge of their duties and assured Nigerians of the resolve of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government towards seeing to the end of crime and criminal activities in the country, and restoration of peace in the nation.
‘This administration will not be deterred in its efforts, until every Nigerian and resident of the country, is free to move around without fear of any threat to his/her life and property…We are, therefore, putting necessary measures and strategies in place to strengthen the stability of the country, as well as ensuring the economic prosperity of our dear nation.’ Rauf Aregbesola
