On the 18th of August 1973, Nigeria kick-started the first National Sports Festival at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
The festival served as an avenue to promote ethnic unity and national integration after the Nigerian civil war ended in 1970. It also paved a way for the discovery of athletes that would represent the country at international levels.
